Formwork, shuttering, centring, staging & scaffolding are temporary structures which are used on-site for specific purposes. In this article, I am going to discuss followings:

Formwork

Formwork is a temporary structure which is used as a mould to pour the concrete. Formwork may be the horizontal or vertical arrangement, made to keep concrete in position until it gains desired strength and shape.

Shuttering

Shuttering is a part of formwork. It is a vertical temporary structure which is used to bring concrete in the desired shape. Or Vertical formwork is known as shuttering. Formwork for columns, retaining walls, footings are known as shuttering.

Centering

Centering is a part of formwork. It is used to support horizontal members like slabs. Formwork for slabs and floor beams is known as centering.

Staging

Staging is a temporary structure which is used to support formwork either it may be for centring or shuttering. Staging is done by using props, jacks, H frames, cup lock system, wooden ballies.

Scaffolding

Scaffolding is a temporary structure which is made around the building to provide a working platform for workers to work at heights. Scaffolding may be the movable or fixed platform.

Note - Formwork removal time shown above in table is for only when ordinary portland cement is used. For other cement formwork removal, time may be suitably modified.
